Hogg, James, The Ettrick Shepherd
- Hogg, James, The Ettrick Shepherd
(1770-1835)
Hogg spent most of his youth and early manhood as a shepherd in Ettrick Forest in the Scottish Borders. He was almost entirely self-educated, but was able to read the Bible and the catechism. Sir Walter Scott included some poems from Hogg's family in The Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (1802-1803). In 1810 Hogg went to Edinburgh, where he met Lord Byron, Robert Southey, and William Wordsworth (see entries), and became friends with publisher John Murray, who published the rest of his poems. In 1817 he assisted at the inauguration of Blackwood's Magazine. His patron, the Duchess of Buccleuch, left instructions in her will that he should be given Eltrive Lake farm in Yarrow at a nominal rate. He was buried in Ettrick churchyard and a monument was erected to him overlooking St. Mary's Loch. Some of his publications: Scottish Pastorals, 1801. The Mountain Bard, 1807. The Forest Minstrel, 1810. The Queen's Wake, 1813. The Pilgrims of the Sun, 1815. The Poetic Mirror, 1816. The Jacobite Relics of Scotland, 1891-1821. Some of his poems: "A Boy's Song," "Charlie is My Darling," "The Skylark," "When the Kye Comes Hame."
